metcalfe’s law “states that the value of a telecommunications network is proportional to the square of the number of connected users of the system (n^2)” (wiki). when i first heard about this law on some blog post curtis wrote, it made intuitive sense to me. later, when looked up the official definition, the image below clarified what my intuition told me.

i’ve been in conversation with friends for a long time about why the right and left (on the political spectrum) seem to function so differently. of particular interest is how the left seems to be so bad at fomenting beneficial change for all while the right seems to be so good at creating change that’s good for the wealthy.

a couple of weeks ago, i had lunch with my friend kelsey and one of the things we talked about was her training for a 100 mile race. she found an online/virtual coaching service and it’s been pretty great for her. she told me a lot about how it works (though i can’t remember exactly what it’s called) and i think i got some really amazing lessons about how to scale my own practice. some of the major takeaways that i’ll probably try to implement in the next year:

last week i was listening to a rerun of on being which i usually don’t do, but this one felt worth it. the interview, which was with martin sheen, i remember as being particularly good and i also kept not being sure if i’d heard it before. i’m glad i listened through it.
