today is about eight weeks out from the average first frost in boston. that means today is the last day i can prune my rosemary. all its current growth needs to get hard and woody over the next four weeks so that those parts make it rhough winter. all the green on the plant will freeze and die off but the woody stuff will survive and produce lots of new leaves and things next year.

this is a weird thing but it’s essentially a transcription of a convo that happened on 11 sept 2017 in copley square sitting in the sun with our bare feet in the fountain water. it’s mostly intended for me to have something to look back at when i want to expand on these thoughts later. they probably don’t make much sense to anyone else. &shrug;

so here’s the thing. i am an obsessive scheduler. it’s because i value my time and think about as the most valuable resource i have. unlike money and other material goods, it’s the only resource i can’t ever get back or more of.

another idea covered by matthieu ricard in his on being interview was about the nature of happiness. and the particular thought that had me shook was the idea that happiness can actually encompass sadness. it’s a fairly complex intellectual journey to get to that conclusion, but essentially it involves a reframing of what happiness is. below is an extended excerpt of a big piece of ricard’s explanation, but for me the key parts are these.
