last night in oakland

so i’ve been to oakland a few times now… more than 5, less than 10. i really like it out here. if i’m honest, i think it’s because there are middle-class black people here alongside a long history of activism and struggle. if the bay weren’t such a gentrifying, water-insecure, fault-lined shitshow, i’d be way down to move out here. but it is. and i won’t (i think).

getting clearer on futurist writing

adrienne maree brown’s outro in octavia’s brood has really helped crystallize some things for me. among them is a ton of clarification about the different types and elements of futurist storytelling. as grant and i wade through building out this alternative futures collective (af or afc) (which i’ve been thinking about a good bit), i wish i had read this excerpt first (and to be fair, someone at css told me to read octavia’s brood in 2015… i just didn’t listen. #ffs why don’t i listen?)

trauma and healing are a big deal right now

i mean this in the most genuine way possible: trauma and healing are blowing up right now. in so many different places and spaces, i’m hearing a ton about people doing work that addresses trauma, often via a desire to heal from it. (note this is interwoven with and also indicated by my recent obsession with bessel van der kolk).
